Playback & navigation
J K L and the arrow keys drive one monitor at a time: the viewer (Source) or the timeline (Program). With the viewer open in the editor they follow the panel you last pointed at or clicked; with the viewer closed they drive the timeline, and in focus mode the viewer. L plays forward at 1× with sound, or doubles the speed if playback is already running forward. A second tap plays at 2×, still with sound at its normal pitch, and holding K + L plays at half speed with sound; further taps of L double the speed (4×, 8×, 16×, 32×, 64×) with the sound muted. J plays backward, muted, from 1× up to 64×. Tapping the other direction starts again at 1× that way; K or Space stops on the current frame. The viewer’s arrow keys work only while the viewer has the keys (point at it, click it, or press Shift+2), because the media browser and the timeline use arrows too. The timeline’s arrow keys need the timeline focused (click it or press Shift+3). The transport bar shows which monitor is moving, in which direction, and how fast.
Tool modes
Track Select Forward sits immediately to the right of Slip in the toolbar. It selects clips starting at or after the clicked clip across all tracks in the current timeline scope. Click empty space to select from that frame instead. Hold Shift to select only the pointed track; press
V to return to Select and move the selected clips. Right-click a clip or selected group for Select everything forward or Select everything backward without changing tools. These select across all tracks in the current scope, starting from the earliest selected clip for forward or the latest selected clip for backward.
In Select mode (V), hold Shift and drag to move the shared cut between two adjacent clips on the same track. Drag either side of the cut; the outer boundaries and downstream clips stay fixed. Both source handles limit the roll. Holding Shift over a shared cut shows the rolling cursor; release it before dragging for an ordinary one-edge trim.
Editing
Copy, paste,
Backspace and Alt ← / Alt → also work on selected keyframes.
Selecting inside a composition
Snapping is always on — clips snap to edges and the playhead as you drag.
Editing without the mouse
Find a moment in the viewer withJ K L (click the viewer or press Shift+2 first), mark it there with I and O, and press , with media selected in the media panel: the selection lands at the playhead and everything at or after it moves later to make room. A clip the playhead sits inside is split there. . places the media without moving anything.
To remove a sentence, click the timeline or press Shift+3, mark its start and end with I and O, and press Shift+Backspace with no clip selected. Moving the pointer over another panel gives that panel the keys; press Shift+3 again to return keyboard focus to the timeline. The range is removed from every track and the gap closes, even when it crosses several cuts. With clips selected and no marks, the same key ripple-deletes the selection.
To adjust a cut, press U to select the edge of the cut nearest the playhead (press again for the other side, a third time for both sides, or click an edge), then tap [ or ] to move it a frame at a time, five with Shift. The active tool decides what the trim does: Select (V) trims one edge and leaves a gap, Ripple Edit (R) trims and moves downstream clips to keep sync, and with both sides selected (third U, or Shift+click the cut) the cut rolls, trading frames between the two shots without changing the sequence length.
