Kino plays professional camera and post-production formats directly in the browser, on decoders we built ourselves. The files your camera or Avid workflow produces play as-is. There is no transcode step before you can work.

Codecs

Apple ProRes	Every variant: 422 Proxy, 422 LT, 422, 422 HQ, 4444, and 4444 XQ, including alpha in the 4444 family
Avid DNxHD / DNxHR	All common profiles, including Avid’s private-label variants
Blackmagic RAW	All compression settings, constant bitrate and constant quality
REDCODE RAW	Modern RED cameras: V-RAPTOR, KOMODO, and the RED2 generation. Older RED sensors are not supported
H.264 / HEVC	Through the browser’s built-in decoders, including when wrapped in MXF
Motion JPEG	Legacy camera and archive footage

Scrubbing stays fast even on 6K RAW, all in the browser.

Containers

A container is not a codec: MXF is a wrapper, and DNxHD is one of the things you find inside it. Kino handles both layers.

MXF	OP1a and OP-Atom — the per-track flavor Avid Media Composer writes and almost nothing else reads — with frame- and clip-wrapped essence and Avid’s private essence keys. Carries DNxHD/DNxHR, ProRes, H.264, and HEVC video with PCM (AES3/Wave) audio
QuickTime (.mov)	ProRes, DNx, Motion JPEG, H.264, HEVC
Blackmagic RAW (.braw)	BRAW clips exactly as the camera writes them
REDCODE RAW (.r3d)	R3D clips from supported RED cameras, straight off the card

These formats play natively. Exports render to delivery formats (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1, and ProRes) — Kino reads BRAW and R3D, it does not write them.
